Which is the Isaan region of Thailand? If you’ve never heard about it before, I suggest you to read the following guide. Below I will present you some basic information and the top highlights of the Isaan region.

The Isaan region is actually situated in the north-east region of the country. As there is no coastline belonging to the region, it is not as popular as the southern regions which offer gorgeous beaches. Yet, it is a wonderful area which is home to numerous cultural and natural visitor attractions. The region is divided into three parts: Southern Isaan, Central Isaan and Northern Isaan. The Khao Yai National Park

One of the most beautiful national parks in Thailand, the Khao Yai National Park is situated in the region of Isaan, in Southern Isaan. Some major highlights of the park are the astonishing waterfalls: Haew Narok Waterfall, Haew Sai Waterfalls, Haew Suwat Waterfalls and so on. Some great activities which can be practiced here are the following: hiking, wildlife observing, kayaking and others.

Phimai Historical Park

One of Thailand’s most astonishing historical parks, the Phimai Historical Park is a major highlight of Southern Isaan. It protects one of the country’s most significant Khmer temples. Made of sandstone, laterite and brick, the structures are extremely attractive for visitors. If you are interested in historic sights or Khmer architecture, don’t miss to visit this breathtaking park!

Phanom Rung Historical Park

The other historical park of the region, Phanom Rung Historical Park is a major highlight of Isaan. Set on an extinct volcano rim, the wonderful and famous park protects several breathtaking Khmer temple ruins. It is an extremely popular tourist attraction, welcoming dozens of visitors yearly. The temple and the structures date from the 10th to the 13th centuries and are built of beautiful sandstone. Visiting this park is surely a unique experience.

Udon Thani

One of the cities of Isaan, Udon Thani is a beautiful historic city. The adjacent Ban Chiang is extremely popular. It is a fantastic archeological site in Thailand with its red painter pottery. If you are interested in archeological remains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the right place to visit!

Surin

The city of Surin is a wonderful tourist destination. There are several landmarks in the city, including Buddhist temples, shrines, museums and monuments. Surin is also famous for its festival named the Surin Elephant Round-up which is a very popular event among visitors.
